Solid Foods

Today Lily starts solid foods.  Yes, I am that crazy mother that bought the Organic Earth Balance rice cereal.   And yes, I read all the labels for all the baby cereals in two stores, and no, I am still not happy with all the crazy ingredients in said Organic Earth Balance rice cereal, but I will make do.

Anyway, the instructions on how to feed said cereal are vague at best for subsequent feedings.

Box instructions: for baby’s first feeding — mix 1 tablespoon of dry cereal with 3-4 tablespoons of breast milk or formula.  Easy.  There are no instructions for the cereal to milk ratio after the first feeding.  The box only says “pour desired amount of cereal” and “stir in liquid.”  Helpful.

Pediatrician instructions:  for baby’s first feeding — 1 tablespoon cereal plus 4 tablespoons milk.  Ok; at least there is consistency.  The instructions then get vaguely unhelpful.  Day 2 –> 2 tablespoons plus breast milk.  Ok, is that the same 4 tablespoons of milk to 2 tablespoons of cereal? or 2 tablespoons of cereal and between 4 and 8 tablespoons of milk?

Pre-Lily, these vague instructions wouldn’t bother me. Post-Lily, I’m on the verge of a stress headache.  The last time we had to follow instructions with the Bili-Blanket she ended up wearing it the wrong way for several days and we ended up in the NICU.  My gut says for subsequent feedings we stick with 4 tablespoons regardless of the amount of cereal because she is supposed to be eating “mush” and not “soup”.  Hopefully good-old Mr. Google has the answer.

In other news, while typing this post, the following one-person conversation occurred:

John: oh she can have eggs … 5 minutes later … oh wait, no she cannot have eggs. Good thing I read that.

Here is hoping we don’t have to call poison control.
